Job Introduction

We have an exciting opportunity for a Database Administrator to join our Data and Analytics team based in Leeds!

As we develop as an organisation, our need for understanding our data becomes ever more important. Data drives business decisions and our global strategy and this is a brilliant opportunity to join a forward-thinking and supportive team.

As our new Database Administrator, you will play a pivotal role in the design, implementation, maintenance and performance of our database systems.

You will work closely with the wider Data and Analytics team to ensure data security, availability and integrity for business-critical databases, as well as plan and implement database upgrades and migrations within both cloud and on-premise environments.

This is a hybrid role with a blend of home and office-based working. As MPS colleagues are spread across the UK, we utilise technology to facilitate our roles with occasional travel to our offices in Leeds.

To balance the needs of both colleagues and members around the globe there will also be opportunities to provide cover and support outside of usual business hours, managed on a rota basis (roughly a week each month).

Main Responsibilities

  • Deliver technical support at all levels within defined SLA’s adhering to the maintenance and the development standards of our systems to protect the integrity and security of our data.
  • Working across the wider division to provide performant, readily available and effective data solutions to internal and external stakeholders, making best use of the tools available (incl. PowerShell, DevOps and Git to name a few)
  • Monitor database health and performance across the estate being both proactive and reactive in your approach to alerts, backups and recovery procedures.
  • Maintain MSSQL databases by setting and enforcing standards and controls, as well as ensure data security and compliance with relevant regulations
  • Contribute towards the formulation and delivery of the database strategy and standards.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Proven experience and understanding of enterprise database design, strategy and architecture across Microsoft hybrid cloud infrastructure.
  • Demonstrable skills in configuration, maintenance, and administration of MSSQL systems working with SQL Server or Azure SQL Databases in a change-controlled production environment.
  • Ability to accurately document and effectively communicate complex concepts to people with all levels of knowledge.
  • An ability to think outside the box, challenge the status quo and turn forward-thinking and creative ideas into tangible results.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, and we encourage you to apply even if you feel you do not match 100% of the technical requirements. We are more interested in your ability to understand data concepts over specific experience with technologies.

About The Company

Medical Protection Society (MPS) is the world’s leading protection organisation for Doctors, Dentists and healthcare professionals. We protect and support the professional interests of almost 300,000 Members around the world, in countries as diverse as the United Kingdom, South Africa and Hong Kong.

We are a not-for-profit organisation, meaning our Members’ premiums are either invested into bettering the organisation, its employees and our products, or kept safe should our Members require support for complaints or claims arising from professional practice.

Our philosophy is to support safe practice in medicine and dentistry by helping to avert problems in the first place. We also actively campaign for regulatory and legal reforms that benefit Members and the wider healthcare professions.

To do this, we need colleagues who are trusted and supported to deliver their best work, whether that be through leadership development, fully-funded training courses or peer-to-peer support. We want our colleagues to feel empowered enough to deliver positive change, display ambition to push themselves and are determined when faced with a challenge, whilst ensuring our Member’s best interests are at the core.
